허브의 어원은 라틴어의 '푸른풀' 을 의미하는 'Herba' 에서 비롯된 명칭으로 현대에서는 각종 향신료를 포함하는 꽃,잎,줄기,뿌리,씨앗 등의 약,요리향료, 방향,살충,살균, 미용, 입욕제,염료, 관상용 등으로 널리 이용되고 있다.
